Our Story

Building the generationAfrica's next chapter needs.

SANIFU is a youth-led NGO developing Africa's next generation of technology and innovation leaders with a particular commitment to young people, women, and people with disabilities.

Where it began

We started with a simple belief, that talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn't. So we built programs that put practical digital skills, mentorship, and access in front of the people most often left out.

Our mission and vision

Our Vision

The Future we're building

An inclusive generation of African technology and innovation leaders that shapes the industries of the future and drives economic development.

Our Mission

How we're building it

We develop Africa's technology leaders and innovators with a particular commitment to young generation, women, and people with disabilities through capacity building, mentorship, and global exposure that turns early curiosity into industry leadership.

Theory of change

How change actually happens.

  • Africa faces two connected shortages, not one. The continent needs more technology and innovation leaders cybersecurity alone is short more than 100,000 skilled defenders, and the same pattern repeats across software, AI, product, and every technical domain the future economy depends on. But numbers alone are only half the story. Africa also needs a different kind of leadership in technology and innovation - founders, builders, and industry shapers whose composition reflects the demographic reality of the continent. Today, most African tech pathways start too late in a young person's life, reach too few, and end too early producing workforce for existing industries rather than the leaders who will build the next ones. Women, people with disabilities, and young people from beyond major urban centres are systematically underrepresented at every stage. Not because talent isn't there. Because the pathways that would develop it don't exist. SANIFU exists to build those pathways.

  • SANIFU's approach to change rests on four principles. Every programme we run today, and in the future is designed to embody all four. We build for the long arc, not the single moment. A single workshop, a single competition, a single training day, none of these on their own produce leaders. SANIFU designs programmes that engage the same young people over time, across life stages, so that early curiosity becomes sustained skill, and sustained skill becomes leadership. We centre inclusion by design, not as an add-on. Every SANIFU programme is built from the outset to reach young people the sector currently overlooks, women, people with disabilities, and those beyond major cities. Inclusion is not a metric we hit at the end; it is the assumption every programme starts from. We connect learners to the industry that will absorb them. SANIFU designs programmes in collaboration with working practitioners, experts building the industry today so that what we teach is what the industry actually needs, and the people we develop have real pathways into leadership within it. We build for compounding impact. SANIFU's model is designed so that today's beneficiaries become tomorrow's mentors, trainers, and leaders. Every cohort strengthens the next. Over time, this turns SANIFU from an organisation that delivers programmes into an ecosystem that produces leaders. These four principles are made possible by the resources that sustain us, a committed team, cross-sector partnerships, sustained funding, and programme infrastructure built for continuity across long time horizons

  • Every SANIFU programme is designed to produce evidence, not just activity. We measure our work across four categories, regardless of which specific programme is being delivered: Reach: How many young people we engage, where they come from, and the demographic composition of every cohort with particular attention to the representation of young people, women, people with disabilities, and participants from outside major urban centres. Skill development: Verifiable evidence of what participants can do through what they build, portfolios, competition results, published work, or industry-recognised outputs that participants carry with them beyond the programme. Progression retention: The percentage of participants who continue from one stage of engagement to the next. This is our single most important metric, because it distinguishes a genuine project from a series of disconnected events. Ecosystem activation: The percentage of SANIFU alumni who return as mentors, contributors, or leaders in subsequent programmes the mechanism through which our impact compounds year on year. These four measurements tell us whether the machine is working. The next section tells us what the machine is for.

  • The change SANIFU exists to produce. An inclusive generation of African technology and innovation leaders who shape the industries of the future and drive economic development. Concretely, this looks like: SANIFU alumni founding and leading African technology and innovation organisations not just staffing existing ones. Women, people with disabilities, and young people from beyond major cities visibly represented at every level of the industry as founders, as senior technologists, as spokespersons, as policy shapers. A self-sustaining ecosystem where each cohort of alumni becomes the mentors, trainers, and leaders for the next — SANIFU's impact compounding across generations rather than depending on continuous external investment. African technology talent developed for African-led industry solving African problems, building African organisations, and shaping global technology conversations from within the continent. This is not a five-year target. It is a decade-long commitment. Every SANIFU decision, every programme we launch, every partnership we accept, every hire we make is judged against whether it moves us closer to this outcome.

Our values

What we stand for

Every organisation has values. Ours are built into our name. Six principles - one for each letter of SANIFU, guide how we build, who we build for, and what we protect when things get hard.

  • Long-term

    Sustainable

We design programmes that are sustainable because meaningful change happens across time, not in a day.

  • Inclusion

    Accessible

Inclusion is not something we add at the end. Every SANIFU programme is designed from the outset to reach everyone, including the neglected groups who are often overlooked.

  • Ecosystem

    Networked

SANIFU is deliberately built as an ecosystem connecting learners to industry practitioners, mentors, alumni, partners, and each other. The network is the multiplier that turns a programme into a movement.

  • Evidence

    Impact-driven

Activity is not impact. SANIFU tracks the outcomes that actually reveal whether our theory of change is working — pipeline retention, demographic composition, alumni activation — and shares what we learn openly, even when the numbers are hard.

  • Discipline

    Focused

SANIFU says no to opportunities that don't advance our mission — even when they're attractive. Focus is what allows a small organisation to deliver disproportionate impact. We would rather build one pipeline well than ten programmes poorly.

  • Commitment

    Unwavering

When budgets tighten, when timelines slip, when trade-offs are demanded, SANIFU's commitment to young Africans, women and people with disabilities. holds firm. Inclusion is not a nice-to-have that gets cut first. It is why SANIFU exists.
